Pieter Lategan Title: Keep it Casual

Pieter Lategan Title: Keep it Casual

Artist: Pieter Lategan
Title: Keep it Casual
Medium: A4 Pencil, HB, 2B

This is an artwork which I had redrawn, I got the image from Pinterest.  The sketch I got from the internet and is originally drawn by Efrain Malo.  He is from Mexico and was born on May 22, 1987, in Tuxtla Gutierrez Chiapas,  one of his most important emergent talents is his caricature sketches.  The passion for detail is one of the main features of this young master’s work.

What do I think of the redraw of this pencil sketch?
Well, I like the angle which he is been drawn.  The legs open and you see his face between the legs.  The head is looking upwards and makes it very interesting.

My opinion of the artwork which I have drawn is as follows.  The face is not 100% yet, the mouth and nose and eyes need to move a little bit to the right-hand side.  More details are needed in the shoes and I would also put more detail in the shirt.  I would love to have a nice idea for a background.

Personally, in my opinion, I really do like the sketch which I have drawn and will look for similar photos to draw again or pencil sketches.

I work four hours on this sketch which I think is very good.

Pieter Lategan Title: Dr. Sydney Brenner - Nobel Prize Winner

Medium: A4 Paper HB Pencil

I choose this man because he is world-famous for his prize which he received in Physiology or Medicine.  He shares the price with H. Robert Horvitz and Sir John E Sulston.

Dr. Brenner was born on 13 January 1972 in Germiston, Johannesburg he died 5 April 2019 in Singapore at the age of 92.

He was a biologist and also called Uncle Syd.  He made a significant contribution to work on the genetic code, and other areas of molecular biology while working in the Medical Research Council(MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England.

His parents were Jewish immigration, his father came from Lithuania in 1910 and his mother from Riga, Latvia in 1922.

He was educated at Germiston High School and the University of the Witwatersrand.  He joined the University at the age of 15.  In his second year, it was noted that he was too young to qualify for the practice of medicine at the conclusion of his six-year medical course.  He then completes his Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomy and Physiology.  He stayed on for two more years doing an Honours degree and then his MSc degree, supporting himself by working part-time as a laboratory technician.  His master's thesis was in the field of cytogenetics.  IIn 1951 he received the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) degree.

Dr. Brenner received an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1985 which enabled him to complete a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree at the University of Oxford as a postgraduate student at Exeter College, Oxford.

Dr Brenner made several seminal contributions to the emerging field of molecular biology in the 1960s.  The first was to prove that all overlapping geneti8ic coding sequences were impossible.  This insight separated the coding function from structural constraints as proposed in a clever code by George Gamow.  This led Francis Crick to propose the concept of the adaptor or as it is now known “transfer RNA (tRNA)”. The physical separation between the anticodon and the amino acid on at tRNA is the basis of the unidirectional flow of information in coded biological systems.  This is commonly known as the central dogma of molecular biology i.e. that information flows from nucleic acid to protein and never from protein to nucleic acid.  Following this adaptor insight, Brenner proposed the concept of a messenger RNA, based on correctly interpreting the work of Elliot “Ken” Volkin and Larry Astrachan.

Brenner, with George Pieczenik, created the first computer matrix analysis of nucleic acids using TRAC, which Brenner continued to use.

Brenner was married to May Brenner (née Covitz, subsequently Balkind) from December 1952 until her death in January 2010; their children include Belinda, Carla, Stefan, and his stepson Jonathan Balkind from his wife's first marriage to Marcus Balkind.

Now my own opinion of my work.

So what do I think about the sketch which I did of Dr. Brenner.

I struggle with his nose and mouth.  This picture I think was taken when he received the Novel Prize.

I only work with an HB pencil to draw the sketch.

Music I listened to:

Madonna - Live to tell (1986)

Madonna - Crazy for you  (1985)

Madonna - Take a bow (1994)

Madonna - Rain (1993)

Enrique Iglesias - Addicted (2003)

Ellie Goulding - Love me like I do - Fifty shade of Grey (2015)

Now I done, it was last night a nice cool windy night with a little bit of rain.

It took me two days to draw this.  I had a very bad day yesterday.  It was very hot but today was nice and cool.  When the weather is like that you feel you can work.  I have now a better understanding of the eyes.  The title I decided must be “Staring at the Ceiling”  I got the words from the song Abba (Song Title: One of Us.)

This is the acrylic painting which I did on an A4 on 8 August 2017. That will help me to see the colors correctly when I start to paint in oil. Also, it helps save paint.

Pieter Lategan - Noses

Artist: Pieter Lategan Title: Noses

Artist: Pieter Lategan
Title: Noses
Pencil A4

Yesterday was Christmas, I was alone at home and working.  Today is Boxing day and it is very hot here.  It is going to be 35 degrees and tomorrow as well.

While I am busy doing this sketch I was thinking who can I paint if I do not do paintings on request.  I was thinking to find a very interesting South African figure and do research on him or her and tell the story while I am busy painting the picture.  It can be for example a rugby players, actor or someone famous.

This is what the internet says if you want to paint a famous person and what to sell it.

As always with all legal issues, the answer is it depends. Your paintings are copyrightable and you absolutely have the right to sell them. The question then becomes, what is your liability if you do sell them? Is a celebrity going to come after you for violating their right of publicity?
It depends on how you sell your paintings. If you are selling in a private sale to a private buyer, then the chances of a celebrity coming after you are slim to none. However, if you ramp up and are making copies and trying to sell mass market, that might get some attention and greatly increase the chance that a celebrity or a rights holder will come after you.
However, artists have a First Amendment right to express themselves, and in the recent Tiger Woods case, the court found that the artist’s First Amendment rights were more important than Tiger Woods’ right of publicity. You can read the case and compare your facts against the ones in the case and perhaps get an idea of where you stand.
Rights of publicity are protected under state law. Not all states have them, although most do. The scope of protection varies from state to state, and you should check the laws in your state.
My answer is for information purposes only, it is not legal advice, and no attorney-client relationship has been formed.

It took me two days to draw all these lips.  It kept me very busy.  I like the idea of only practicing parts of the body.  I feel I learn more to do it like that.

My theme is African Primitive art, see article below about Primitivism.

This article is about primitivism in the visual arts. For the social movement, see anarcho-primitivism. For the American art style, see Primitive decorating. For art by self-taught artists, see naïve art. For other meanings of "primitivism" or "primitive", see Primitive.

Henri Rousseau, In a Tropical Forest Combat of a Tiger and a Buffalo, 1908-1909, Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg
Primitivism is a Western art movement that borrows visual forms from non-Western or prehistoric peoples, such as Paul Gauguin's inclusion of Tahitian motifs in paintings and ceramics. Borrowings from primitive art has been important to the development of modern art.[1]

The term "primitivism" is often applied to other professional painters working in the style of naïve or folk art like Henri Rousseau, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee and others.
